Whether you prefer lazing on the beach with a good book in hand, showing off your skills in the surf, outdoor barbeques with the family or afternoon dips in the pool – Australian summer revolves around the sun.
Australia has some of the highest rates of skin cancer in the world with two in three Aussies diagnosed with melanoma each year . Overexposure to harmful UV rays is the leading cause for skin cancer, sunburn, premature aging and eye damage . Luckily, Shade Swim’s top tips for staying sun protected make it easy to soak up some vitamin D safely this summer.
Find a shady spot
The sun is most dangerous during the hottest times of the day, falling between 11am to 3pm. Of course, the time we tend to spend in the sun aligns with the sun at its most powerful – so securing a shady spot is key to minimising any damage to your skin. Whether it’s a tree, beach umbrella or pop-up tent, having a place to find shelter from the sun is imperative to staying sun safe.
Apply and reapply
Sunscreen with a minimum SPF30 or higher is your best friend this summer. Make sure to apply a layer 20 minutes before you head outside and continually reapply every two hours. If you’ve jumped in the pool, been for a swim or have sweated off your sunscreen, make sure to reapply liberally. Another way to fight UV rays throughout the day is putting a layer of sunscreen or SPF moisturiser under your makeup to make sure you’re protected at all times.
Sun hats
Is there anything more glamourous than a huge floppy hat? Or maybe you have a penchant for round, straw hats? Either way, throwing a hat on adds a stylish layer of sun protection to your face and neck, which is often missed when applying sunscreen or protective clothing. Plus – hats go perfectly with our stylish Shade Swim swimsuits!
